Orchard Update, Spring 2016

by Tara

I thought for sure a two-week trip to the midwest would mean we'd miss an event on the homestead I'd been eagerly anticipating: the blossoming of our fruit trees! Fortunately, I was wrong. Just a few days after our return, our trees are leafing out and bursting into bloom with the smallest, most delicate white and pink flowers I've ever seen. I'm so happy we didn't miss the display!

On a less positive note, our peach tree has yet to show signs of life—I'm hoping it's a late bloomer/leafer. And apparently, fruit growers aren't hopeful for a bumper crop this year, as we've had some hard frosts late in the season. I guess we'll find out!

yay, glad to see everything is looking good in the orchard. don't worry about the late peaches. i've had the same with both my peaches and 1 variety of plum, they just tend to be 2-4 wks later than all the others. also, whoever pruned those trees did a great job, all have great shape. keep up the awesome work guys! cheers from seattle!

What kind of tree is the one with the white flower? We have two pear trees in our urban orchard and they look really similar.

Looking great! Too bad for the peach tree. It's the most sensible of the sturdy trees. Give it some time.

Aaron - Thanks! We haven't done pruning yet, but the folks at Elmore Roots Nursery did a great job. The peach isn't dead... but it only has one clump of leaves on the whole tree!

Carl - I think it's our cherry, though I'm not sure.

Anne - Thanks!
