The Food Game: Serbia Edition

by Tara

Unfortunately, the really good stuff we've had here, we have no photos of. There was Pljeskavica (grilled meat sandwich with many salads, slaws, and toppings), Ćevapčići (ground meat sticks, grilled), Urnebes (a salad made of feta cheese and hot peppers), and my favorite, Punjena pljeskavica (a gigantic half-moon of a ham and cheese-stuffed burger). Whoops, I guess we were too hungry for photos!

Nevertheless, here are some snacky type foods we've tried so far:

I love these spicy pickled peppers—they are the same ones they serve in Macedonia alongside Pastrmajlija. Here, they are served as an option on Pljeskavica.

Some Serbian salami, with cool houses on the label.

It looks good but it has a strange flavor neither of us likes… a little musty maybe?

The naturally-dyed easter eggs from a dear, old Serbian woman:

I thought they might be pickled or something, but they were regular hard-boiled eggs.

Some peach flavored gummy candies…

Store-bought strudel. It was pretty dry and not very flavorful or sweet, but then again, it was store-bought.

Lightly sweetened poppy-seeds made an interesting filling, though!

I had to pick up this package of Almond Gurabija last time I ran to the grocery store because they looked delicious.

But they were sort of 'meh', with little to no flavor (certainly no almond flavor), except for the super-sweet powdered sugar topping. We need to go to a real bakery before we leave.

I am on a sesame kick right now, and these handmade crackers were the perfect snack.

Our very favorite snack here has been the yummy, readily-available, package of Garlic Bake Rolls. There's nothing traditionally Serbian about them, but they are really good!

And that's that. Not terribly exciting. I can't wait to try Romanian food, and I really can't wait to get to Southeast Asia where this game will really get fun…

Were the easter eggs dyed with onion skins do you think? Or something else?

Just curious,
