Tired is Dangerous

by Tyler

This morning, we dragged ourselves out of bed at 5AM with the shared hope of finishing a massive to-do list for our timber framing class next week. We started the morning sitting side by side, staring into the middle distance, robotically eating bowls of cereal in a sleep-deprived haze. When at last we schlepped ourselves outside to get down to work, we were anything but productive.

Instead of blowing through our goal list with the extra morning hours, everything took twice as long because we were both cranky and exhausted. In fact, it was downright dangerous to be working in our fatigued state. While loading our knee-braces into the back of the truck, one of the logs got dropped, smashing Tara's middle finger. It will be several days before she can use her left hand freely again.

Tara's wasn't the only injury of the day. Later in the afternoon, while standing on the bumper of our truck, fighting to open our sticky tailgate (I really need to fix this...), I slipped and landed chest-first on the edge of the bed, seriously bruising one of my ribs. It now hurts to breathe deeply, and lifting basically anything sends shooting pains across my body.

Mark my words, this is the last time I will ever suggest foregoing sleep in an effort to get more things done.
