Sunrise

by Tara

This morning, as Tyler and I tend to our woodland by a smoky fire, I look up towards the eastern sky in reverence and expectation of the rising sun. I wait in silence, watching the skies grow pale, and then lo! It arrives! Just a warm glow at first, then a glorious golden orb rising above the earth, warming our faces and bathing the world in its radiance.

At the very same moment that the sun appears, the silence in this winter wood is suddenly broken by a joyful noise we haven't heard for months: a solitary bird begins "sounding its barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world." Seemingly in celebration of this morning miracle, it heralds the return of the sun.

Morning Sunrise Over the Green Mountains Seen From Our Land

This singular moment in infinite time, at this singular location in an infinite, expanding cosmos, takes my frosty breath away. I am left in quiet awe of this precious earth on which we live, and this beautiful land that I have the privilege of inhabiting during my lifetime. My heart swells near to bursting with love for this place.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

Yea! I think of that first, late winter birdsong as the very, very beginning of spring - marking the spot where we haven't missed any of the much-anticipated changes that lengthening daylight brings yet. Enjoy your new views:)

I've been reading your blog for several months and want to say 'hi!". I had been looking around for info about Arlington and got caught up with your daily adventures. I'm looking forward to seeing how your homestead develops. This post was so beautiful.

Zoe - Thanks! I completely agree. We're going back to the midwest for some of March and April, and while I am so excited to see friends and family, I am bummed that we're going to miss out on all of the little seasonal changes that will happen on our land. Ah well, there's always next year!

Marcy - Thanks for the kind words about this post, and for taking the time to say hello-- we're so glad you're enjoying our website! :-)

Hi Guys,
We're still following your adventures and enjoying your new ones as much as we enjoyed reading about your travels. Still going your own way and still being inspirational :)

Beautifully written Tara. I love the last paragraph and can't wait to see that sunrise in person. I am having one of those not so common slow days at work and decided to skip back to 2011 and read some of the posts from SE Asia. OOOHHHH how I miss it and wish I could be there right now!!!

Jim & Sandra - Hi you two! It's great to hear from you, and know that you're still out there, following along. :-) Hope you're both doing wonderfully! Any adventures on the horizon?

Natasha - Thanks, lady! I also cannot wait until you see that sunrise in person (although I hope there's no snow in June...). We were just talking today about projects we want to do when you get here! Oh Southeast Asia, how I love you... we really must plan a reunion trip or something.
