Feeling Settled

by Tara

With over a month of camper-living under our belts, all of our concerns about buying a travel trailer have vanished. We've worked out the kinks, adapted to its challenges, and are now certain that we made an excellent decision. In retrospect, our original idea of renting off-site during the building process seems unthinkable! I can't imagine being anywhere but on our land.

The dust we kicked up during our move across the country is finally beginning to settle, and, for the first time in recent memory, I'm beginning to feel rooted. We've been nomadic or semi-nomadic, living out of a tent or a family member's home for nearly five years now—it feels so good to stay in a place of our own!

At the beginning of March, we will be returning to the Midwest to get the last of our things. I'm looking forward to spending time with our friends and family, but honestly, I will miss this place deeply while we're gone. Already, I ache knowing that I won't be here to listen to the new birdsongs each day as spring approaches, witness the birth of our friend Jenna's baby goats, or try maple sugaring this season.

But when we return to Vermont in late April or May, it will be for good. The garden I've been wanting to make "eventually", and the bees I want to keep "someday" could become a reality this spring. Come May, I'll have seed catalogs delivered to my real address! I'll take fiddle lessons from Jenna, and Hercilia and I might take a beekeeping class together. We haven't even left and I can't wait to come home again!

great blog. our family loves visiting vermont. may i ask why you chose the southwest corner of vermont as opposed to other areas? we normally frequent the northeast kingdom, which is breathtaking.

Hi Kito! Thanks!

We've heard wonderful things about the Northeast Kingdom, and would love to visit one day soon.

Reading about our land-hunting journey, beginning with this journal entry, will give you a good picture of why we settled where we did.

Had to grin when I read this post. Totally, totally understand. We're nearing the end of our first summer in our own place and we're just starting to feel really at home now the garden is overgrown and giving us more beans than we can eat every day after months of waiting for things to start to grow. Trust you will enjoy that first spring!
