Cleaning Our Woods: Part Four

by Tara

Today, while Tyler was busy programming, I was outside in my work jacket and chaps, tackling the massive cleanup operation in our woods.

Tara Clearing Brush

I spent most of the morning dragging smallish logs and dead treetops out of the woods with our truck. I also cut brush into manageable pieces with a chainsaw, and tossed it on a fire rekindled from yesterday's embers.

When lunchtime rolled around, Tyler prepared food and tea for me, while I sat my woodchip-covered behind on our nice cushions and tried not to get anything dirty.

By the end of the day, I was scarcely able to lift my chainsaw, so Tyler helped finish the final haul while I stared into the fire, utterly exhausted.

Tara & Her Brush Fire

It was a good kind of tired.

Don't forget to let some dead wood on the forest floor for insects, birds and your new small neighbors on 4 feet...they need it more than you can imagine! And you'll save some work!
D. , sorry ;)

No need to be sorry David, you're absolutely right, and we have lots to learn.

We're mainly removing all the blown over trees for firewood purposes (there is a ton of it). That leaves plenty of wood on the forest floor. We just purchased Positive Impact Forestry, but if you have any suggested reading we'd love to hear about it.

Thanks for the thoughts!

you could also try asking your county forester if you haven't already. They are always up to help! Downed wood is definitely important. I wonder if there is a difference ecologically between hardwood and softwood logs. Since the conifer logs aren't as good for fuel it makes sense to leave them laying around.

Great idea Charlie. I just looked him up--we'll try calling later this week. We'll definitely post about the results.
